Rape Drugs

 How Are Rape Drugs Used?

Rapists use a variety of substances to sedate their victims.  Drugs are frequently given to victims without their knowledge, often by slipping the drug into their food or drink.

People who have been given rape drugs may react differently to the sedating substances depending on the dosage, their individual metabolism, their sensitivity to the substance and the presence of other drugs or alcohol in their systems.  Possible effects can include:

  • Impaired judgment
  • Loss of inhibition
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Unexplained drowsiness
  • Memory loss
  • Appearing extremely intoxicated after consuming a non-alcoholic beverage or a small amount of alcohol.

How Can I Avoid Rape Drugs?

  • Never leave beverages unattended.
  • Do not take any beverages, including alcohol, from someone you do not know well and trust.
  • At a bar or a club, accept drinks only from the bartender or server.
  • At parties, do not accept open-container drinks from anyone.
  • Be alert to the behavior of friends and ask them to watch out for you.
  • Remember that anyone appearing extremely intoxicated after consuming only a small amount of alcohol may be in danger.
